Cartridge filters need a deep clean every three to six months, and sand or DE filters need backwashing when pressure rises about 8 to 10 psi over the clean baseline. Pools under heavy tree cover in the Northwest often need it more often.
Filter sand typically lasts three to five years. Over time the grains wear smooth and stop trapping debris, so if the water stays cloudy after cleaning and balancing, the sand is often the reason.
Each has tradeoffs. Cartridges filter finely and save water since there is no backwashing, sand is simple and durable, and DE catches the finest particles but needs more care. We recommend based on your pool and how you use it.
Constant cloudy water, short cycles between cleanings, cracked or fraying cartridges and a tank that leaks under pressure are the usual signs. We inspect the filter and give you a straight answer on repair versus replace.
Backwashing reverses water flow through a sand or DE filter to flush trapped dirt out the waste line. Turn the pump off, set the valve to backwash, run until the sight glass runs clear, then rinse and return to filter. Backwash when pressure rises 8 to 10 psi over the clean baseline. Cartridge filters are not backwashed, they are removed and washed.
